Creating a Barnyard Themed Children’s Church: My Environmental Design Project at Grace Point Baptist Church, Louisville, KY
In early 2024, I helped Grace Point Baptist Church in Louisville, KY transform their church’s childrens wing into a fun and inviting area. This included themed-space design, project management, and execution on-site.
Grace Point Baptist Church had completed a large renovation and was looking to rebrand their children’s area and classrooms for an unveiling on Easter, March 2024. They contacted me in January 2024 after finding a link to my article, “How to Choose Relevant Themes for Your Children’s Ministry Spaces,” featured in Religious Product News. I worked with the church to plan the execution of this large project within a short time frame.
The space consisted of 10 rooms, check-in area, and four hallways. I designed a to-scale site plan, sketched floor-to-ceiling artwork, then designed the approved artwork on the computer. We worked to schedule a time for me to work on-site with their team of volunteers. I managed timelines, developed paint and supply lists, and worked with the church to get the space prepped prior to my arrival.
My time working on site was planned around my university class schedule as I had just started the spring semester – flying to Louisville after my Tuesday in-person classes, meeting with my students on Zoom on Thursday, then flying back the following Monday. During that time on site, I drew the mural design on the walls while their team of 20-30 volunteers painted. I drew for four of the days, then finished the murals with black painted outlines the remaining days. The team was in a good place to complete the project when I had left.
